ACDSee 10 promises to be a program that bridges the gap between high-powered photo alteration software and online sharing programs. With a dizzying amount of options and sophistication, it may do all it promises but it could leave users overwhelmed.

This program opens up with an opportunity for users to take a virtual tour of the program and learn about all its features. This is an excellent place to start, because the ACDSee 10 gets confusing in a hurry. This is not a bad thing, however. Users familiar with Photoshop's options will find everything from cropping and coloring tools to more advance masks and red-eye removers once a picture is selected. Users with photo editing experience will love the versatility of this program, but those without the basics will need a lot of experimenting before they get comfortable with all the icons and options.

Photo alteration is only half the story with ACDSee, which makes it unique. The other side of the program is a confusing collection of file trees, icons and options to save and categorize your photos. This will also require a long trip through the Help menu to sort out. However, once the knowledge is gained, users will enjoy a myriad of opportunities, even one that allows direct uploading to Flickr.

This program is a heavy-hitter, giving users unparalleled tools and flexibility, its only drawback is that newcomers to photo editing could be overwhelmed. Especially with the short 7-day trial that will even have more experienced users scrambling to test all this program offers. McAfee.VirusScan.Enterprise.v8.5.0i

The existence of two products using the McAfee name, McAfee VirusScan Online (located at www.mcafee.com) and McAfee VirusScan 5.x, 6.x, and 7.x (located at www.mcafee-at-home.com or at www.networkassociates.com), is confusing. As far as we know, the original McAfee Antivirus was sold by their owner, Network Associates, and is today known as McAfee VirusScan Online. Later Network Associates released a new antivirus program, today known as McAfee VirusScan. Both products are using the same antivirus engine. VirusScan has more features, but can, according to user feedback, sometimes be difficult to install and is often unstable. VirusScan Online on the other hand is a smaller, more reliable program, with several of its crucial components actually residing on McAfee's server rather than on your computers hard disk. 

Update: Recently Network Associates has taken steps to reacquire McAfee VirusScanOnline. If they are successful these two products may end up being merged into one. 

It's our opinion that McAfee VirusScan is far from as good as you could get the impression of by reading some reviews, where McAfee VirusScan often trails Norton Anti-Virus. We believe McAfee VirusScan suffers from many of the flaws of Norton Anti-Virus. Those are instability, difficult to install, difficult to uninstall, and just generally lacking many of the features that we want in a good antivirus program. 

Just as Norton Anti-Virus, McAfee VirusScan offers poor archive support and is vulnerable to attacks. Also beware of the fact that many users has experienced trouble with the CD version of this release. The good thing is that McAfee VirusScan has an excellent detection record, but that's just not enough since the program doesn't scan all types of files. It also fails to remove many viruses. 

Overall, the new version is an improvement from previous releases, but it's still not good enough. Therefore we cannot recommend this product yet. Improved stability and support for more archive formats could change that.

AVG Internet Security 8.0 is the latest version of the complete home security package from the company that made a name for itself by offering powerful, free antivirus software to the masses. It's a pretty comprehensive suite of tools designed to protect all areas of your system, with a particular emphasis on online threats.

During installation you can choose to enable the AVG Security Toolbar, which uses the LinkScanner component to allow for real-time protection against malicious Web pages and automatic downloads. You also have the option here to perform a software and definition update, and create a schedule for automatic scanning.

It's a pretty fast process, and before long you're taken to the main interface, where you can monitor the level of protection via a set of 12 icons covering areas such as anti-virus, anti-spyware and the firewall. You can turn each of these components on and off individually to customise your level of security, but strangely certain components such as anti-virus or anti-spam don't appear to offer any customisation features, instead simply reporting whether the component is up to date.
 

In order to tweak your preferences in these more obscure areas you'll need to trawl through an advanced settings menu, which isn't particularly friendly and doesn't really make the software any easier to use.

Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition 10

Having improved a lot last year in Symantec's flagship antivirus product, it makes sense we'd see more modest enhancements for this year's Norton AntiVirus 2008. While Norton AntiVirus 2008's antivirus test results compare favorably to our Editors' Choice winner Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7, it's the user experience that suffers in this release. The final size, a hefty 300MB, makes us wonder what's taking up all that extra space--Norton AntiVirus 2008 is roughly six times the file size as Kaspersky. Unlike Kaspersky, Norton AntiVirus 2008 is only available in a single-user license edition. Unlike Kaspersky, Symantec provides Norton users with little explanation of its features or settings, either in the configuration settings or on its technical support section. Also we don't like Norton's dependency on Internet Explorer to explain Help items or services provided by Symantec (windows pop up in IE even when Firefox is your default browser), or that fee-based services have once again crept into the technical support section. All of these things distract the user and weigh the product down in our minds. Your computer is safe with Norton AntiVirus

Setup
Norton AntiVirus costs $39.99 for a single license. By comparison, Panda Antivirus offers its three-user license for the same price. While Kaspersky is slightly more expensive, selling its single-user license for $49.95, it offers a three-user license for just $10 more. There are no three-user licenses available for Norton AntiVirus 2008, so, if you have two more computers in your home network, you'll have to pay $40 for each computer. 

Norton AntiVirus 2008 runs on Windows XP and Windows Vista, but not Windows 2000 or any earlier version of Windows. Norton AntiVirus 2008 requires at least 256MB of RAM and a whopping 300MB hard drive (consuming roughly six times the space of most of its 2008 competitors). Symantec does offer a full function 15-day trail of Norton AntiVirus 2008. 

LiveUpdate, which used to be a separate process, is now integrated into Norton AntiVirus 2008--and about time.
